This is Nicolas, a fisherman on the coast of Ghana.

“Behind him a storm gather, like the forces he can’t control: industrial fleets taking the catch, beaches choked with plastic and waste, few opportunities for the young generation. And yet his bright colourful appearance is representing his individual strength, dignity, and identity.

In Europe, we often take the ability to make our own choices for granted. For many local Ghanaens here, it’s a rare privilege. Nicolas told me that for him there’s an alternative path to happiness despite the hopelessness that many in his community are facing: A strong moral compass. to be humble, be honest and to be able to rely on each other.

This photo reminds me that no matter our backgrounds, we have to stand in for our core values and for each other —even, or especially, when the storm is close.”
