Parque Nacional Madidi, deep in Bolivia’s Amazon, is a breathtaking blend of cloud forests, alpine meadows, and lowland rainforest—home to jaguars, giant otters, and over 1,000 bird species. It’s one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, with Indigenous communities like the Uchupiamonas and Tacana protecting its fragile ecosystems.
But this sanctuary is under threat. Illegal gold mining contaminates rivers with mercury, while ranchers, loggers, and poachers push deeper into protected zones. Park rangers face violence, and some areas are now conflict zones. Still, local communities are fighting back—launching legal challenges and demanding an “ecological pause” to safeguard Madidi’s future.
