Unseen Shrine
Photographer: Natasha Chapplow, PhD
Natasha is an Earth Scientist who deciphers the planet’s ancient secrets. Her work explores how powerful natural forces like tectonics, erosion, and climate, have sculpted the landscapes we see today. From towering mountains to winding rivers and fossilized remains, she is able to reveal what our world looked like millions of years ago and how it continues to evolve.

In the Himalayas, life is worshipped through nature. Tashi Delek is a blessing for health, fortune, harmony, and luck. During a three-week field expedition to some of the most remote parts of Bhutan, I came across a shrine rising from the middle of a river, draped in prayer flags. To me, it symbolises the devotion of people who understand that the very landscape cradling these sacred places is itself most in need of such a blessing. Glaciers melt, rivers shift, and communities are forced to adapt to floods, landslides, and changing weather patterns.
I took this photograph because I believe it captures the resilience of the well wishes many of us hold for the world we live in. It was captured in a location accessible only through special government permission, this image is one of a kind and will not be available to view outside this exhibition.
