This image was taken in Ethiopia whilst I was directing/shooting a film for Pala, a sunglasses brand and certified B Corp, which supports eye-care programmes across Africa.

Sadly, 10% of the world’s population are unable to access basic eye care, yet restoring sight is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce poverty because it enables reading, learning, access to better education and improved job prospects - not to mention general overall wellbeing.

The young girl pictured here is one of many individuals who I was fortunate to spend time with on the shoot.  I remember her - and all of the subjects I photographed - being absolutely lovely.  I also remember there being LOTS of laughter!  She was so full of life; a really fun, bright and vibrant character filled with hope and optimism.

Yet this was sad for me, knowing that she was born into an environment with such limited resources and opportunities. Living in the UK, I know I am extremely privileged; I have access to healthcare which is currently free through the NHS, and affordable eye care on my local highstreet. The democratic political system here has allowed me to access a good education, and the opportunities to use it to work, support and feed my family.

To me, this photograph represents the contrasts between my life, and those of many other people across the globe. As well as the ecological cost of my consumption. We don't all have access to everything which I take for granted. And yet, we all have the choice to work together to create a positive vision, and hope for a brighter, more sustainable future.
